In my office, when a patient starts chiropractic care, they often ask what steps they can take towards improving their chiropractic results.
There are many ways to improve your results and the biggest is simply keeping a consistent schedule. When you start with chiropractic, it is common for the chiropractor to recommend multiple visits a week. This helps your body overcome old patterns and learn new ones. Your spine has been moving improperly for a long time causing shortened muscles and areas where nerves aren't communicating properly. When you get adjusted, this starts to change. Keeping up with the frequency your chiropractor recommended is very important.
Taking time to think about your posture and the poor ergonomic situations that led to you beginning care is really important as well. Think about your laptop or phone usage. Where are you when you are using your laptop? How can you improve that work station. When you are on your phone tapping away, do you really need to spend that long on your device? When you are using it, do you hold it up in front of your face or are you constantly staring down at it?
It is also important to look at what you are doing fitness wise to support your results. Are you 40 lbs over weight and hoping getting adjusted each week is going to fix the damage the extra weight is doing? A long term plan of losing 10 lbs a year and keeping it off will make all the difference in how you feel. What is your current exercise program? Don't have one? Movement is necessary for human beings to feel good. If you aren't doing anything start with walking. If you are already a fit person who has a great exercise plan in place, let's look at spine specific exercises to support your program.
There are a lot of ways to improve your chiropractic results and good communication between patient and chiropractor will usually be the key in making sure you get the best results.
