Why do lack of sunlight and depression go together? It’s because of the Vitamin D you don’t get when you aren’t exposed to the sun as well as the fact certain people (like myself) are predisposed to seasonal affective disorder. If you walk in to my Plymouth chiropractic office at 7:30 in the morning you will wonder what that bright light is coming from my desk. It is a sunlamp. As any of my friends and family members will tell you, without sunlight I turn in to a grump.
One other recommendation I would make is to test your Vitamin D levels. You can even buy your own online: https://nutridyn.com/vitamin-d-test It's a test we can order for you or your MD can and it usually costs less than $100. They will tell you that you are still normal (technically) above 30 but if you are hovering anywhere close to that level, you are probably already feeling like a disaster. I like to see Vitamin D levels above 50 or even 60.
I have had patients poison themselves with Vitamin D and cause serious issues. They were using horrible quality supplements and taking too much of it. I suspect the supplements were contaminated as well. The only brand I recommend and trust is NutriDyn. You can find the product that I take here: https://nutridyn.com/d3-5000It's what I order for myself and my patients when requested. When people test low, I recommend 15,000 IU's of Vitamin D for 90 days and then recheck and adjust from there. That is well over what I have seen most MD's recommend but it is what will get your levels up and getting your levels up is critical.
Several years ago I found a full spectrum light on craigslist, thought I would give it a go and picked it up. Now that I know it works great, I bought a new one, two actually, one for work and one for home. The brand I use is Nature Bright. Costs $99. You can buy it right here: https://naturebright.com/products/sun-touch-plus I use it for 30 minutes in the morning and in desperate times, the beginning of December, I use it in the afternoon as well. Everyone around me can tell when I have missed it. Give it a shot. You don’t have a lot to lose!
